Tornero Cave

The Tornero CaveThe route, with a total length of more than eleven kilometres, is located in the municipal district of ChecBeteta and is the longest cave in the whole of central Spain. The entrance is a large gap at the foot of a limestone escarpment and its interior is a labyrinth of galleries, including two main ones with perpendicular directions and different origins.

The external entrance is located at the foot of the balconies of the Dry SickleThe main mouth of the river is 30 metres above the river. A fairly large main entrance leads us into an immense antechamber where it is not difficult to find cows in summer taking the coolness. As we go through the anteroom and leave behind the outside light to gain darkness, we will arrive at the real entrance to the cave, a small "L" shaped tube where just one person can fit through.

It is only three metres of narrowing and then it opens out into the main gallery. This gallery leads to the "labyrinth", and just before this, in a chaos of stones and downwards we have the deviation to the gallery of the emergence. Although it is well known that the most impressive part of this cave is the D5, as some say, a cave within a cave, with more prolific formations and steep slopes.

Another highlight of this cave is the Sifón Mari Carmen, where there is a spring about 4 metres wide and 4 metres deep, which leads to a large room that communicates with the outside, and which in times of drought can also serve as access to the inside of the Tornero cave.

Although it is not a cave prodigal in large stalactite and stalagmite formations, it is possible to discover some areas with more or less important lava flows and small formations.

Finally, one of the curiosities is that much of the water that drains to it comes from the poljé del CubilloIt has been discovered that part of the water that seeps into this valley ends up in the Cueva del Tornero, an impressive cave that is very attractive thanks to its internal development and the size of its cavities.
