Peña Escrita

This site of Peña Escrita is home to some of the most important unique engravings, distributed in two different formations and locations: On the one hand, a small coat with the floor at the same height as the stream, inside which there is a large detached block of stone on which a large number of engravings appear. On the other, the roof of this coat, which has numerous large, human-shaped engravings. It is a flat, sloping rock of approximately 30 metres in lengthThe hill, which forms the floor of the hill and rises some seven metres above the level of the stream.

These rock engravings are well known to all the people of the region, who traditionally They attribute it to the Arab period. The figures represented there are striking for their particular characteristics, although the difficulty involved in their chronological and cultural attribution led researchers to think that it was a modern forgery, an idea that was later discarded, as there are documented references to this rock group from the 17th century.

The Peña Escrita is not the only place of interest in the area, as just a few kilometres away, there is a small rock The open-air engravings on which appear a series of engravings, among which the following have been distinguished crosses and chrismons.

For the moment, no detailed studies have been carried out to estimate the age at which it was made, nor a correct interpretation of its meaning, although the clarity of its forms (especially the human ones) makes it an enigmatic place that arouses great interest among visitors.

<< How to get there?

The access is not signposted and is via a forest track accessible to cars that starts from Canales de Molina. From the track, there is an unclear path marked with blue dots and signs on the ground, which runs parallel to the edge of an escarpment and which must be followed for about 10 minutes. It is not easy to find it on your own, so we recommend that you download the track of the route right here.
