Route from Olmeda de Cobeta to the castro of Peña Moñuz

This route takes us to one of the Celtiberian sites of the Upper Tagus, the castro of Peña MoñuzIt is located on a high rocky crag at an altitude of 1,240 metres, from where it exerts a spectacular visual control of the surroundings. It is a walk of less than 6 kilometres with only a slight slope at the beginning and without any notable difficulty.

In this case, in order to reach the castro, we start from Olmeda de Cobeta and we take the path that leads us uphill to the Carrasca Conceja, a large holm oak whose acorns were distributed among all the inhabitants of the town in ancient times. From here we continue climbing until we reach the high plateau, always following the path, until we reach the area around Peña Moñuz.

Route from Olmeda de Cobeta to the castro of Peña Moñuz

Once we get to the castro, we can spend as much time as we want contemplating this marvellous site and the views it has to offer. This is a place that deserves a stop on the way to learn about the three different defensive systems that the inhabitants of this small settlement built, not without great effort, to safeguard, as far as possible, the welfare of their villagers.

This time we return to the start on a good, well-maintained road that takes us steadily downhill as we pass through the famous Dehesa de la Olmeda, where a multitude of centenary trees transport us to a forest of those that no longer exist.

It is here that we will turn off the road to first visit the Hermitage Oak and later the Tall Oaktwo more than singular specimens of trees.

If we continue downhill we will reach a crossroads where we turn left to return to our starting point on this route from Olmeda de Cobeta to the Peña Moñúz castro, which is about two kilometres or so from this last turn-off.
