Matasnos Sink

The Sumidero de Mata Asnos is one of those places that never disappoints. It is located in the Serranía de Cuenca in the town of Carrascosa de la Sierra and is one of the most unique caves in the central area.

This cavity is the point where the Matasnos Stream It leaves its course above the earth's surface and spills its waters through a spectacular vertical shaft that can only be explored by the most daring. It is possible to descend to elevation -122 where there is a siphon that marks the end of the exploration.

<< How to get there?

To access the mouth of the cavity we have to start from the village of Carrascosa. If the intention is to get to know the area and its landscapes, we will have to approach the point where the Carretera de Carrascosa crosses the Arroyo de Matasnos, and once here we will start to walk along the stream downstream, until we see its waters disappear.

If you are interested in potholing and want to descend the cave, we recommend leaving Carrascosa along the old road that leads to Puente Vadillos, and after approximately 3 kilometres you will come to a crossroads, where you can leave your vehicle if it is not an all-terrain vehicle, to descend the ravine until you come to the Arroyo de Mata Asnos stream, which is practically being swallowed up.

The end of the journey for the waters of the stream, which has its source at km 44.900 of the road that crosses the Beteta gorge, is the river Guadiela, which flows through this wonderful Natural Park, giving shape and life to this marvel of nature.
