Castro de Castil-Griegos

Situated in the heart of the Alto Tajo Natural Park, this settlement is located on the top of a high hill, like all examples of this type of site. Although it may now seem to be a place far from the big cities, the truth is that Castil de Griegos was an ideal spot from which to watch over one of the few natural communication routes that crosses the sierra, namely the La Vega valleyIt is one of the few natural passes that crosses the Alto Tajo from north to south and also crosses the Serranía de Cunenca.

Since archaeological work began on this site, Castil-Griegos has been particularly notable for the remarkable defensive constructions that its inhabitants erected in successive phases throughout the Iron Age. These alone make it a unique place in the whole of Spain. However, year after year it continues to enrich its history with new discoveries and mysteries.

There is evidence of the destruction of the village, The Roman legions carried out a violent invasion of the area, and with it the abandonment and oblivion of this area for centuries. One of the most outstanding features of this settlement is its complex defensive systemIt is made up of two walled enclosures, one inside and the other outside, as well as a moat.

Associated with the settlement was found an impressive necropolis incineration sites with a long chronology with several phases of use and with urned tombs marked with stelae and burial mounds stone wall, you can see a sign indicating it about 100 metres after passing the "La Aguaspeña on the right-hand side of the road.
