La Aguaspeña

La Aguaspeña is a tufa building growing. Rainwater dissolves the limestone rocks that predominate in the area and causes the proliferation of pipes, hollows and numerous caves, which are another attraction of the region.

When the groundwater comes to the surface and forms springs, the calcium carbonate precipitates and, when it solidifies, forms calcareous tuff, a very porous rock that in some places builds spectacular mineral monuments like this one, often covered with mosses and various types of vegetation. But these tuffaceous buildings are also in a slow and constant transformation, growing thanks to the water that flows through them, often forming waterfalls and occasionally causing some collapses, at which point the water resumes its work of reconstruction and once again models whimsical figures.

At the same time, another part is inactive, as its torrents have dried up, clogged or diverted, leaving the impressive vertical structures riddled with caves through which the visitor's path runs, culminating at the top of the waterfall and the source of the spring that gives life to this beautiful and magical place, the seat of mankind since time immemorial.

Visiting the Aguaspeña is a great way to observe with our own eyes the process of rock formation. We must go to the locality of CzechFrom here, take the asphalted track that takes 2 kilometres to the car park in front of the spring. Another option is to take the Georuta 8which passes through and explains enclaves such as this one.

Today, due to its aesthetic qualities, the area has been made accessible by the installation of wooden walkways and railings.

It is estimated that about four centimetres of tuff are formed each year and that the Aguaspeña did not exist only two thousand years ago, which may seem like a long time, but in geological terms it is almost like the blink of an eye.
