Las Quebradas

The beautiful town of ChequillaThe village, with its whitewashed houses, is surrounded by spectacular monoliths and towers of reddish sandstone and conglomerates. Just before entering the town, you can park your car in a field where several of these towers are located, next to a panel and in a beautiful setting. We are in front of Las Quebradas that make up its little Enchanted City.

Erosion of the sandstones and conglomerates has led to the formation of these curious residual reliefs. The presence of two fracture directions (one almost N-S and the other NE-SW) facilitates the differential erosion, generating a true labyrinth of blocks.

The rocks on which these particular reliefs are developed are equivalent to those found in the Sierra de Caldereros or the La Hoz Ravine. They were deposited in huge Triassic river systems, around 240 million years ago, under an arid climate that caused the oxidation of iron minerals, responsible for the red colour of the rocks.

The "enchanted city of Chequilla", already inside the village, is a curious relief on these same sandstones that gives rise to a labyrinthine landscape in which is located the "bullring".A natural widening between the rocks where bullfighting spectacles used to be held.

Several plaques provide extra information and Geo-Route 8 runs through this particular landscape.
