Ethnographic route 2: The "Chozones de Escalera".

This route of the Chozones de Escalera, takes us to two groups of these curious constructions, so typical in our walks through the Alto Tajo.

Its origin is still not exactly known, although some date it back to the Middle Ages. Their main function was to provide shelter for shepherds and flocks, and they were built with the only two materials that abound in these highlands: stone and juniper wood.

They generally consisted of a stone construction, roofed and supported by juniper wood. Sometimes they were built with a living tree as a central pillar, although they are not the most abundant.

So, if you are interested in the ethnographic heritage of the Alto Tajo, the route of the huts of Staircase gives us a perfect opportunity to visit these two groups:

<< El CerrilloThe access is from a path on the right hand side from the road to Fuembellida Beteta Staircase. Look closely at the start beacon which marks the path to follow, but go slowly because we may pass it. From here we reach the group of huts after a short walk of about 1,500 metres, where we are greeted by an explanatory sign with more information about these constructions.

<< The savannah forestAfter visiting El Cerrillo, we go back on our way and continue along the road in the direction of StaircaseWe drive through the village (direction Lebrancon) and after 1,200 metres there is a path on the right that leads to a splendid group of huts. Pay attention to the directional markers as they will help you to follow the path.

Signposting and Start of the Route

The access to the start of the route is signposted next to the road, although you will have to be careful not to miss the post, as it can go unnoticed, so we recommend that you go slowly and unload the track for more peace and quiet. Once you have walked along the track, you will come to an explanatory sign that marks the start of the route on foot.
