Poveda waterfall

The origins of the Poveda waterfall start with the La Chorrera reservoira small reservoir located in the upper course of the Tagus river. The water was dammed by the Poveda waterfall itself, where an attempt was made to build a hydroelectric power station to supply the municipalities in the area, which had to be discarded when leaks were detected, so it was never finished. But the dam remained, the leaks increased and the water took care of the rest. Now we see it broken and in a state of abandonment, but the agitation of the water that it produces facilitates the precipitation of the dissolved calcium carbonate, giving rise to a spectacular cascading limestone tufaThe Tagus River itself has to a large extent naturalised it.

The remains of many of the elements that made up this power plant, such as the aforementioned dam, the spillways, the electrical wiring and the the barracks staff, now converted into tourist accommodation. Although it is a place generated by man's action, it is one of the most important enclaves of the Tagus river most valued by visitors. It is also the largest waterfall in the upper reaches of the Tagus River and a very popular place to visit. recommended at any time of the year.

In the pools that are formed downstream and in the recula of Salto de Poveda it is possible to practice diving with one of the active tourism companies in the area.

<< How to get there?

This is one of the places most famous and well-known of the Upper Tagus and its surroundings, and this is favoured by how easy it is to get to such a paradise. If we want to get as close as possible to it with our vehicle, we will have to take the dirt track that starts at the side of the Bridge of Poveda de la Sierra, just where the information booth. This track will lead us practically to the waterfall in the vicinity of the Casas del Salto.

Another option is to carry out the route o georuta that show us this and other spectacular places of the area, such as the Taravilla Lagoonlocated very close by. From here, from the lagoon, we can also go the other way round, drive to the car park and then go down to the river, cross the fishermen's gangway and do that section of the trail in reverse until you reach the Poveda waterfall.
